Yay! That was such a great blog post! I am very happy to hear about your travels, and even about your boring daily routines! I hope Germany is treating you well. When exactly is your return date?

P.S. One of the "automatically generated possibly related posts" for this entry is "America's Unhealthiest Grocery Shoppers," which I think is kind of hilarious.

P.P.S. Re: not knowing what Sarah Palin sounds like: she has a hardcore Dakota accent. I think she grew up there or something? Extremely midwest.

Hey Marianna! Reading your post made me RIDICULOUSLY 'homesick' for Paris - Eric Kayser is good, but there are better bakeries with better bread. Let me know if you're ever heading back in that direction and I'll give you all my tidbits of wisdom if you so desire.

Also, while you're in Germany, you should try and get to the Alsace region of France. I've never been to Normandy, but Alsace was simply stunning (well, Champagne and Alsace). Green rolling hills, mist, WWI battle fields, Franco-German food, wine, awesomeness, basically.

Mind if I link you at my site?

Mari,
I have almost no familiarity with blogs, and have already lost a portion of this message in a draft form, I expect that this may become somewhat jumbled. I was not aware that you were back in Germany. Way to go! Like your Father I am excited that you are in the Palatine area from which our family came. Between sampling the wine and cheese (a noble goal) keep your eyes open for anything that would give a hint of a connection with our family.

I think I know about 3 German words. Pilz is one of those words, so I am particularly fond of your blog name.

What mycology lab are you working in? What are you doing? What organism are you using? [My masters research was a study of alcohol production of Saccharomyces carlsbergensis, a German fungus involved with the production of spirits.]

Have a great time and discover great wines.
Mike

I guess I can't reply to these, I just have to post a new comment. I liked the Bill Bryson book, and although I probably would've kept reading it until the end of time, it wasn't particularly better than his other books. It didn't really go anywhere, which is mildly annoying, but it's Bill Bryson, so we forgive. Also, the whole "thunderbolt kid" thing didn't pan out at ALL.

Part 2: I love forcing people to speak German, and I will gladly do it to/for you. Be prepared for powerpoints.

Sounds great. I'm glad you're enjoying yourself/eating lots of pretzels/writing about it so I can live vicariously through you as I sit in my office pretending to do work (I am going to be checking back a lot, I can just tel.) When you come back can we have Germany pow-wow where you tell me the cool places to go and maybe teach me a couple basic German words?
